Most common in large kitchens, islands can definitely also make a bold and impressive impact even in smaller spaces.  Through a well thought out plan and beautifully executed style, a kitchen of any size can achieve an equally stunning impact especially with the perfect choice of kitchen island benchtop material. Some experts suggest opting for a waterfall marble-like benchtop as it can deceive the eye and make the space look bigger.

This kitchen of a recently renovated penthouse apartment by Karen Aston Design demonstrates how an island in a small L-shaped kitchen can take centre stage and, at the same time, provide enough room for dining, movement, and storage in a functional, modern space.

To create this stunning result, the kitchen layout was redesigned to include the central island with striking marble-like Smartstone benchtop, brushed brass fixtures and a bold pendant light for a sophisticated yet relaxed interior. With a waterfall edge all the way down to the newly-laid rich walnut coloured timber floors, this impressive kitchen island features a benchtop in luxurious Calacatta Manhattan from Smartstone’s exclusive range of innovative surfaces that beautifully replicate natural stone in durable quartz. Rich yet subtle, Calacatta Manhattan features dramatic veining and gold accents on a white luminous background, making it a suitable match for brass fixtures and dark cabinetry.

Designer Karen Aston recalled that after she put forward the Calacatta Manhattan as her preferred option, her clients said that in addition to the excellent service they received from Smartstone they found the large vein marble options from Smartstone much nicer than other brands they looked at. She added that the larger size slabs were more economical and generally, the pricing per square metre was better than other options.

With a jumbo slab size of 3200mm x 1600mm, Calacatta Manhattan is one of the most popular surfaces from the Paris Collection which aptly takes its inspiration from a city renowned for its sophistication and style with colours evoking facets of Parisian life, from stylish street scenes to elegant parks, and from café colours to the decor in grand French family homes.

“From my perspective, I think Smartstone have done a great job on designing the larger veined options in this upper end range. They are my go to option when a client wants this luxury look. They look very ‘real’, slab sizes are great, and the honed finish is lovely,” Karen said.

With a city skyline view, the penthouse is located in the former Mater Misericordiae Maternity Hospital in the lower north shore of Sydney. Built between 1939-40, the building is designed with an inter-war art deco style characterised by sleek, linear, often rectangular geometric forms, arranged and broken up by curved ornamental elements.

“The new owners wished to update the existing 80’s interiors and create a contemporary and timeless apartment space,” according to Karen.  “This apartment renovation exceeded the client’s expectations both in glamour and functionality providing a special nod to the history and timeless style of the building in which it is found.”
