Featured Project: Waukivory Estate – The Cottage
Designer: Naomi Findlay

Inspired by her dream to create her own unique bed and breakfast, renovation expert Naomi Findlay used much love and a lot of energy to transform a run down, neglected farm cottage and convert it into a delightful and amazing farm stay accommodation in NSW.

Just 3 hours north of Sydney, Waukivory Estate is in the midst of dairy and cattle country and 20 mins from the heart of Gloucester, the closest town to world heritage Barrington Tops National Park.

“This is my dream project because it’s creating a destination. As we move through the project, it’s about creating experiences,” said Naomi, design and curator with Naomifindlay.com and Findlay & Co. As one of the best stylists in the country, Naomi works with people around the country helping them create beautiful, healthy and wealthy spaces with her renovation and design courses.

Aiming for a humble country cottage look and feel, Naomi achieved the daunting task of completely restoring the simple classic charm of this 100 year old farm house.

The renovation included building from scratch a kitchen that is not only functional but also has the desired look and feel to flow with the rest of the cottage on a minimal budget.

“People say the kitchen is the heart of the home and they are RIGHT! It is also one of the most expensive rooms to renovate. Hence I decided to build as much of it ourselves!” she said.

Before and After

Carefully planning and curating the kitchen area to keep within budget, Naomi opted for a combination of a flatpack kitchen with a Smartstone bench and splashback, statement pendant lights and the finishing touches of the timber trims work together to give a real custom look.

“Naturally in this case the stone is a hero so putting amazing benchtops on your flatpack can completely change it,” she added.

For benchtop and splashback material, Naomi chose the exquisite Bianco Onix, a durable quartz surface that beautifully replicates marble with its distinctive sweeping grey vein on a glowing white background.

As her favourite kitchen feature, Naomi picked the engineered stone which undoubtedly delivered a classic charm that went well with all the theme of the property.

“The gorgeous natural looking benchtop and backsplash from Smartstone is not only easy to clean and durable but it looks stunning! I just love it!”

For the two bathrooms, Naomi used Smartstone as 900mm vanity tops, continuing the classic look and feel throughout the cottage.

Before and After

Smartstone delivers the beauty of natural stone but with a harder surface, offering superior durability and the practical benefits of being highly resistant to heat, scratches, stains and chips. Being non-porous, it is ideal the surface for food preparation in kitchens and wet areas such as bathrooms.
