“The biggest decision you’ll make for your kitchen is the stone for your benchtops (if you decide to go with a stone that is). It’s a decision you don’t want to mess up,” said designer Loni Parker of Adore Home Magazine.

For her own kitchen benchtops, Loni had chosen Amara from the Smartstone Santorini Collection, a dazzlingly beautiful and versatile range of pure, perfect whites quartz surfaces inspired by idyllic white-washed houses in the Greek islands.

Initially, Loni visualised a more heavily veined surface but after a visit to Smartstone’s showroom in Ormeau QLD, she picked out something different for her kitchen. She said a visit to a showroom is worth the time as a small sample is very different from seeing full size slabs. The way to best appreciate the beauty of quartz surfaces is in person at Smartstone’s viewing gallery located in different states or your nearest stockist.

“I went with Smartstone’s ‘Amara’ and I am thrilled with my choice. It’s got a really soft subtle marble vein that isn’t overpowering. I think it’s one of their more whiter looking stones too and that’s exactly the look I wanted for this very white-on-white kitchen,” she added. From a classic range representing beauty, quality and value, Amara is a soft, beautiful quartz surface with a subtle, random grey vein on a white background.

One of the major alterations done in the reno was the removal of a non-structural wall that separated the kitchen from the living room to create an open-plan area with a kitchen island, making it feel more contemporary.

Now in the centre of the open space, the new Amara kitchen island features a beautiful waterfall edge, a two-seat casual dining bar and a front panel with Tasmanian oak, a recurring theme that created warmth throughout the entire home. The island front neatly matches the custom-made open shelves and flooring as well as fixtures in the bathroom, laundry and study nook.

Also in Amara, the back bench has a sufficient work area for cooking prep with an integrated induction cooktop and perfectly laid kit kat mosaic tile splashback, the same one used in the laundry room.

The cabinet design was essential in creating a functional kitchen with ample, optimised and accessible storage spaces. With brush gold handles, the cabinets also integrated the fridge and dishwasher to deliver a very clean, minimalist contemporary design.

Changing the layout also made the dining area feel like an extension of the kitchen with a round dining table and custom made bench under the window with pull out storage drawers underneath.
