Calacatta Oro shines in new kitchen

Incorporating natural timber into interior design brings a warm and relaxed ambience to any space. Timber is a perennially popular element in kitchen design and, although classic kitchens feature all-timber cabinetry and furnishings to match, these days timber is being revived in a subtle, but no less impactful way.

For this kitchen renovation in the northwest Sydney suburb of Rouse Hill, the home owner wanted to incorporate existing and new timber elements into a clean, modern kitchen design. “The client was looking for a warm look that tied in with the natural timber tones,” says Brady Harris of Harris Kitchens & Joinery.

The light hue of the timber floorboards acted as a foundation for all the other design elements of the kitchen. “Striking the right balance between the different features of the kitchen was the biggest challenge,” says Brady. “It was important to not have too much of one thing.”

Similar light timber features in selected cabinets, floating shelves against white walls, and framing on the base of the central island. Farmers Doors white cabinets with natural handles completed the main design. Wall-to-wall windows over the sink and stove areas allows for ample light to stream through to enhance the welcoming, homely vibe of the space.

Selecting a benchtop surface was a separate challenge in itself – it needed to be a surface that blended in seamlessly with the natural, welcoming feel of the kitchen, complementing the cabinetry and exuding a touch of luxury. The client chose Calacatta Oro, a replica of sumptuous Italian marble with grey veins edged with distinctive gold highlights, from the previously released low silica Ibrido collection. Due to its popularity, Calacatta Oro is one of three Smartstone surfaces to transition to the new Sintered Collection.

Also in the stonemasonry business, Brady says that Smartstone was an obvious choice. “Smartstone offers a large range at quality prices; the benchtop selection really tied everything together.”
