Calacatta Oro – the perfect choice in designers’ project

Dynamic design duo, Andy and Deb, previous contestants on The Block, chose stunning Smartstone Calacatta Oro for a family home renovation in the Gold Coast Hinterland.

With a vision of creating a stunning and practical family home inspired by its surrounds in Queensland’s Gold Coast Hinterland, DNA of Design embarked on their latest project ‘Unearthed’.

“We loved the green forest views, and with the elevated position it was easy to see the potential right away”, explains Deb Saunders, Interior Designer for DNA of Design.

The first step was to rework the layout of the existing home. Luckily, this transformation of spaces is what the team, former The Block fan favourites, Andy and Deb, is renowned for.

“Our vision was to create a connected floor plan with an indoor-outdoor flow which is synonymous with Australian coastal living”, says Deb.

Double-height windows and glass doors were installed in the new extension with an open floor plan allowing plenty of natural light and views of the outdoors from every room. An impressive 11-metre high stone-clad fireplace sets the design tone - a combination of organic natural materials and a muted colour palette creating both a sophisticated and relaxed interior.

Carrying this aesthetic into the design of the kitchen, butler’s pantry and nearby laundry required early planning to ensure a harmonious and balanced look. “We choose Calacatta Oro from Smartstone because the grey and gold vein perfectly complimented all of the hues throughout the home including the flooring, cabinetry, appliances, and handles”, explains Deb.

For a household of up to eight, a Smartstone benchtop and splashback was a practical choice without compromising style. As a beautiful reinterpretation of Italian marble, Smartstone Calacatta Oro offers qualities such as durability and resistance to stains, scratches, and heat – benefits that are a must-have for any busy family.

One of three colours initially available in the Ibrido Collection, Calacatta Oro has transitioned into the new Sintered Collection compromising of 24 surfaces, each a beautiful recreation of luxurious natural stone. Classified as a porcelain product, the Sintered Collection is Smartstone’s new surface range that elevates the qualities of traditional porcelain to an entirely new level.

Touches of gold, artisanal lighting and beautifully curated homewares and artwork finish the kitchen to perfection. This attention to detail and uncompromising material selection has created a perfect balance between aspirational design and real life, and ultimately a home that will stand the test of time.
