  • Redefining stone surface aesthetics and performance, for Australian interiors and the great outdoors.

Porcelain, reimagined.

The wait is nearly over. Smartstone proudly presents its innovative new surface range
that redefines manufactured stone aesthetics, performance and capabilities: the Sintered Collection.

THE SINTERED STONE DIFFERENCE.

Sintered stone is a surface material which has been rapidly growing in worldwide popularity as a beautiful, hardwearing and sustainable surface choice. It differs from engineered stone in its manufacture and composition, using a ‘sintering’ process that comprises raw materials and uses no resins, adhesives, quartz, or metal compounds. Sintering replicates millions of years of the earth’s metamorphic processes by combining advanced stone manufacturing technology with natural fusion techniques. Intense heat and immense pressure bind raw materials to create an ultra-compact, non-porous stone surface with a refined aesthetic.

EXCEPTIONAL PERFORMANCE. INDOORS AND OUT.

With its next-level durability, the Sintered Collection takes the beauty of Smartstone surfaces beyond interiors and into the great outdoors for the first time. It offers near-endless indoor applications, from benchtops and bathroom vanities, to fireplaces, floors, walls and furniture. The added resilience of UV stability and fire- and weather-proof properties make sintered stone at home in any outdoor setting under the Australian sun. In every application, Smartstone Sintered Collection is highly resistant to stains, heat, chemicals, chips, scratches, mould and bacteria.

Natural stone style. Sophisticated aesthetic.

Smartstone’s curated range of 24 stone-inspired surfaces is tailored to Australian tastes with European flavour. The Sintered Collection is housed in three price points: Pure contains the purest white and black, and versatile neutrals; and Classic and Deluxe veined ranges, which includes precise recreations of luxurious stones. Sintered Collection surfaces come in either Matt or Suede finishes and a choice of edge profiles. All surfaces offer through-body biscuit that perfectly matches the surface colour. Veined surfaces offer through-body veining while bookmatching is available for selected surfaces.

Trusted quality. Affordable luxury.

While the Sintered Collection represents an exciting product evolution, the range maintains the many trusted qualities and values for which Smartstone has been renowned since 2002. The new range continues Smartstone affordability, to make the luxury of living with stone surfaces a more accessible and viable option. Large slabs (3200mm x 1600mm x 20mm) deliver economy while enhancing design freedom. Smartstone extends its commitment to environmental care with sintered stone’s sustainability and its eco-friendly and energy efficient production process. The Sintered Collection comes with Smartstone’s 15-year Limited Warranty.

FAQs

  • Q.

How does sintered stone differ from engineered stone?

    A.

Unlike engineered stone, sintered stone is a natural material which is formed by heat and contains no quartz and resins as binders. In a similar process to porcelain manufacture, materials are fused using high temperatures and extreme pressure, creating an incredibly compact and durable surface material.

  • Q.

When will the Smartstone sintered stone collection be available?

    A.

The launch date is scheduled for March 2024. Stock will be available from February 2024.

  • Q.

Will the sintered stone collection offer the same aesthetic and properties as Smartstone engineered stone ranges?

    A.

No. Smartstone’s Sintered Collection offers superior durability for both interior and exterior applications. Sintered Collection uses advanced print technology to deliver precise recreations of prized natural stone styles unlike traditional quartz surfaces which are primarily made using aggregate of varying sizes. Therefore while some patterns may be similar there are no direct substitutes for the current quartz collection. The new collection will come in the same jumbo slab size and come with a 15-year Limited Warranty. Like all our products, surfaces in the new Smartstone range are tested for durability and non-porous properties, as well as resistance to staining, chipping, heat, chemicals and scratching. All surfaces are also certified food safe by NSF/ANSI Std. 51 (National Sanitation Foundation – Food Equipment Materials).

  • Q.

What is the composition of sintered stone?

    A.

The Smartstone Sintered Collection is composed of natural raw materials. These include a combination of clay, feldspar, talc, and cornish stone to produce a highly durable surface material for indoor and outdoor use. The Smartstone Sintered Collection safety data sheet is available upon request.

  • Q.

How is sintered stone different from engineered quartz?

    A.

The formulation and raw materials used to manufacture sintered stone are completely different to engineered stone. No quartz or resins are used in the base. Smartstone sintered surfaces are manufactured through a proprietary and exclusive technology that entirely differs from quartz surface manufacturing. This innovative and advanced technology uses extreme heat and intense pressure that replicate the earth’s natural metamorphic processes to bind the materials to produce a new and solid surface.

  • Q.

What is sintering and how is sintered stone manufactured?

    A.

Sintering is the process of compacting and forming a solid mass of material by heat and pressure without melting it to the point of liquefaction. Naturally occurring in earth’s metamorphic process during rock formation, sintering happens when atoms in mineral deposits diffuse across the boundaries of the particles, fusing the particles together and creating one solid piece. By definition, porcelain, ceramic and compact sintered surfaces are all ‘sintered’ surfaces. However, there are some major differences between these products. Smartstone sintered slabs are manufactured using innovative proprietary technology with automatic slab production equipment and advanced automation and intelligence, producing exquisite aesthetics in highly durable material.

  • Q.

    Is the slab full bodied?

    A.

Smartstone Sintered Collection features through body veining which means the colour and pattern are produced throughout the thickness of the slab. Non-veined surfaces all feature same-colour biscuit which means when cut, the body of the slab reflects a similar colour as the surface.

  • Q.

Are sintered surfaces manufactured within an environmental waste management system?

    A.

The manufacturing facility for Smartstone Sintered Collection is ISO 14001 certified. ISO 14001 is an internationally agreed standard that sets out the requirements for an environmental management system in place and designed to help businesses remain commercially successful without overlooking environmental responsibilities and impacts. It helps improve environmental performance through more efficient use of resources and reduction of waste, gaining a competitive advantage and the trust of stakeholders. Excess, damaged or waste materials at the facility are reused, added, and reprocessed as raw materials to produce new surfaces. In addition to a certified environmental management system, the facility also conforms with ISO 45001 occupational health and safety management system standards.

  • Q.

What thickness is recommended for kitchen benchtops when using sintered stone?

    A.

All Smartstone sintered stone slabs come in 20mm thickness. A thickness of 20mmm is recommended for kitchen benchtops to eliminate the need for a substrate and allow a sturdier and stronger benchtop. This thickness provides strength integrity and minimises breakage during handling, transport, fabrication, and installation.

  • Q.

Is Smartstone sintered stone easy to maintain?

    A.

Smartstone sintered surfaces are very easy to maintain. Simply remove and wipe off any food particles with a soft cloth or sponge. To keep the benchtop in top condition, regularly clean with water and detergent. Smartstone Sintered Stone is made with natural raw materials without any harmful substances so the acidic and alkaline substances will not affect or damage the surface.

  • Q.

Can Smartstone sintered stone be repaired?

    A.

Yes. Sintered surfaces can be repaired by stone repair professionals. For more information, please refer to our Fabrication Manual.

  • Q.

As a stonemason, can I fabricate the new collection of sintered stone in the same way as engineered stone?

    A.

No. There are new techniques that will need to be introduced. The Smartstone team will work closely with you on implementing the sintered stone fabrication process as seamlessly as possible.
