A white Smartstone benchtop beautifully transforms Queensland laundry in a recent home renovation

Project: Laundry Benchtop Renovation

Did you know that Australians spend 5.8 hours a week* on average doing their laundry? Given this time spent, shouldn’t we approach our laundries as more than just utilitarian space and consider how we can make them more visually-appealing?

Loni Parker, editor and founder of Adore Home Magazine, has done just that with an extensive laundry renovation in her newly purchased home. Loni transformed a laundry room she described as “unusable” into a fabulous and functional room that makes the everyday chore of sorting-washing-folding into something enjoyable – yes, really!

The ‘before’ part of the makeover wasn’t pretty, a dank and mouldy laundry with leaking taps, exposed pipes and a broken hot water system. Design-wise, Loni wanted to create a fresh space with a predominant use of white. She chose Smartstone Arcadia for the benchtop, one of Smartstone’s superb range of white quartz surfaces and also one of the most popular whites for benchtops, a versatile cool white with a fine to medium grain. Arcadia matches flawlessly with the granite sink from Temple & Webster and the glossy splashback tiles in Tile Cloud’s Brunswick Kit Kat.

Loni chose white floor tiles to “help bounce light around the room.” The walls are painted in Dulux ‘Vivid White’ and the linen cupboard and upper cabinets are Polytec Melamine Polar White Sheen. The wood in the bottom cupboards brings warmth to the white space in Tasmanian Oak Woodmatt Melamine Finish.

Loni prioritised having plenty of storage over a dryer, so only does washing on sunny days which are fortunately frequent where she lives. One of her must-have storage items was a Blum pullout laundry basket, a clever feature for concealing dirty clothes.

Loni’s laundry renovation was a major undertaking but was it worth it? “Absolutely,” she says. “Washing clothes is now my favourite chore and I love hanging out in the laundry!”
